Purkey

Right-handed pitcher, 1958-1964. Inducted 1974.

Knuckleball pitcher who also threw a strong curveball, slider, changeup, sinker, and a fastball with movement. His acquisition from the Pirates helped turn the hard-hitting but poor pitching Reds of the 1950s into the team that would ultimately win the 1961 pennant.  Selected as an All-Star for two seasons while a Red.  Went 23-5  in 1962, a year in which he also led the league in pitcher WAR.
